Our member, Mr. Sekgopotso Makgeru, a dedicated Picker at SG Convenience, faced a sudden and unfair dismissal in March 2024. Despite a solid work ethic, he was charged with: Failure to reach "picking stats" (100 cases per hour). Gross insubordination for delaying a visit to the managerās office to finish a task. The company sought to terminate his employment based on these charges, despite Mr. Makgeruās explanation regarding the lack of available machinery and the physical toll of working until midnight.
The CCMA has ordered the following relief: Full Retrospective Reinstatement: Mr. Makgeru returned to his position on 19 August 2024. Financial Redress: The employer was ordered to pay R24,822 in backpay. Restoration of Dignity: The ruling confirmed that workers cannot be treated as "numbers" when equipment and working conditions do not support the targets set.
